Friday night it started. I went to bed and woke up at some point during the night with major sinus drainage and a raw throat. Normally I know the ‘moment’ I give into a cold and I don’t feel like I ever reached that moment. Either way, I wasn’t feeling good. I woke up the next morning with my normal fighting constitution and started my regimen of sorts. The next day I felt much better and just had drainage, all of which was clear! On day 3 I started working out again, we couldn’t run outside but did the Blogilates Food Baby workout with few modifications to lighten things. Today we ran/walked, another success. I don’t think I’ve ever started exercise again while only a few days into a cold but found that it really has helped loosen things up, I just made sure I was getting enough sleep. 🙂
Here are the tips that I know helped me:
- Drink lots of water, LOTS
- Drink hot water with minced garlic and minced/sliced ginger 3-4 times a day (add lemon juice and honey if available)
- Drink lots of green smoothies/juices! My go to was 1/2 pineapple, 1 bunch of Italian flat leaf parsley, half a lemon, and coconut water – this is super detoxifying and hydrating
- Sleep, get as much as possible
- Drink 2 tablespoons of Bragg apple cider vinegar, straight, 3 times a day for a few days. You can dilute it if you have to but try it straight for the quickest benefit/relief. This really helped my throat and then I think helped stuff in the ‘background’ after the throat was better. This will probably need a chaser of water or something, for me it was like taking a shot of hard alcohol, shivers and burning esophagus but it was WORTH it.
- Light exercise if it makes sense. If exercise is just going to further exhaust you then don’t do it, but if you can do a little it will really help your lymph system get moving and clear the junk out your body while boosting your immune system
- Lets not forget the neti pot – I LOVE LOVE LOVE this tool and have hooked various family and friends onto it. My 8 year old brother even tried it! (A quick tip if you’re battling a reoccurring sinus infection like I was a few years ago pre-rawfoods; add a few drops of collodial silver and a few drops of liquid chlorophyll. I don’t go on anti-biotics so this worked great for me!)
What are some of your home remedy ‘go-to’ health fixes? xoxo
I like all your suggestions. I will add the smoothie to my line-up, though I rarely get a cold anymore!!!
Whenever I feel a cold coming on (body-ache, or scratchy throat), I dab some TeaTree Oil up my nose, and in my ears. I also like to sweat out the symptoms: hot bath, tightly wrapped head-to-toe, sleep under lots of blankets.
I love your site, Michelle!
Thank you so much Helen! xo Good tips as well, I like the tea tree oil one and will have to remember that but hopefully not ‘need’ to use it 😉
